Terms of Service
In effect from 16 August 2026.
These terms are an agreement between you and Flaming Kangaroo, which operates LangKata. By signing in you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the service.
Who may use it
You must be at least 13 years old. Where the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing to online services, you must meet that age or have a parent or guardian agree for you. You need a Google account to sign in.
What the service is
LangKata writes short articles in the language you are learning, on subjects you choose, and asks you to read them aloud. You tell it when you have done so, and it keeps a score and a streak. It also explains individual words when you tap them.
Articles are generated by a machine, and will sometimes be wrong
This is the most important thing on this page, so it is not buried in a list. Every article and every word explanation is produced by a large language model. It is not written or checked by a human, and it is not reviewed by a teacher or a native speaker before it reaches you.
That means the text may contain:
- grammatical errors, unnatural phrasing or wrong word choices;
- incorrect translations, definitions or pronunciation guidance;
- statements of fact that are simply untrue, including about history, science, medicine, law or current events;
- material that does not suit the subject you asked for.
Treat what you read as practice material, not as a reference. Do not rely on it for anything that matters — and in particular do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions. If you are learning for an exam or for professional use, check what you learn here against a source written by people.
Your score measures how much you have read aloud. It is not a qualification, a proficiency measure, or evidence of anything to anyone else.
Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account, so keep your Google account secure. Tell us through the contact form if you think someone else is using yours. One account per person; do not share one.
Fair use of a free service
LangKata is free, and generating articles costs us real money on every request. There are limits per reader on how much can be generated in a day and in a month. When you reach one, article generation pauses until the period resets — everything already in your browser stays readable. We may change these limits as costs change.
We may add paid plans later. If we do, what is free today may change, and we will tell you before that affects your account.
What you must not do
- Break the law with it, or use it to produce material that is illegal where you are.
- Try to make the service generate hateful, harassing, sexual or otherwise abusive content, including through what you enter as your interests.
- Attempt to get around the usage limits, sign-in, or any other restriction — including with scripts, automated clients or multiple accounts.
- Scrape the service, resell it, or use it to build a competing dataset or product.
- Attack it: probe it for vulnerabilities, overload it, or interfere with anyone else’s use of it. Responsible disclosure of a genuine security problem through the contact form is welcome and is not a breach of this clause.
Content and ownership
The site, its design, its code and the LangKata name and mark belong to Flaming Kangaroo. We do not claim ownership of the text you type in as your interests. As for the articles the service generates for you: use them as you like for your own learning — we make no claim of ownership over them and, given how they are produced, we make no promise that they are original or that anyone can own them.
The service comes as it is
LangKatais provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will teach you anything. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of it at any time.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Flaming Kangaroo is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, or for any loss of data, opportunity, or profits, arising from your use of LangKata. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or ten Canadian dollars.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or liabilities. Where that is so, the exclusions above apply only as far as the law permits, and nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Ending it
You can stop using LangKata whenever you like, and can have your account and data deleted through the contact form. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, or where we are required to. If we close your account without cause, you may ask for your data before it is deleted.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when the current version took effect, and we will give notice in the app before a material change takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, and the courts of that jurisdiction have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute — except that, if you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
These terms are published in English. Any translation is for convenience, and the English version governs.
